Prologue July 3, 2004
The van for “Heaven Scent” floral shop pulled in at the shipping door to Circus Circus in Reno. They were bringing four carts (one hollow) of flowers for the big wedding celebration scheduled to take place in one of the banquet rooms the following day. The “Gardner” jumped out of the driver’s seat to signal the rest of his “helpers” it was time to roll the carts out the back of the truck and down the ramp. “Chrissy”, short for Chrysanthemum was still in the passenger’s seat handcuffed to the door. She was nervous, she didn’t want to anger the “Gardener”, his wrath was unforgiving. Chrissy was the oldest flower, and clients have no interest in a wilted flower. So the “Gardener” made a deal with her, if she could pluck the newest flower without error she would be set free. Of course her freedom would have certain precautions attached, she would be administered a serum, known to the girls only as “amnesia juice”. She was also promised a little starting money, and her journal, which didn’t appear to contain any messages or hints. The “Gardner” got back in the truck and closed the door. He started speaking to Chrissy in that terrifyingly gentle tone. “Relax my precious Mum, it will be fine, and just think all your freedom will cost is the freedom of my new flower. Now remember, the bud has already been chosen, all you have to do is get her into the hollow of your cart. Her mom works here as a cocktail waitress, but does some “extra” work on the side. My employee of the month will pay for her services and keep her distracted. So you should have no problems. The child will need to use the bathroom eventually and has been instructed to use the same one every time. Once she goes into the bathroom, ask her to help you with something in the Nursery room. Its against the law to keep surveillance in a Nursery room, so that will be perfect. Just keep your face away from the cameras everywhere else. When you have her alone cover her face with the rag, you must do this from behind so that she doesn’t see you coming. When she falls asleep put her in the cart. Hector will put a maintenance sign on the door permitting entry, so you won’t be disturbed. You know what will happen if you fail me so you must follow these instructions explicitly. If you do not come back with her I will consider our deal void and keep you in the garden forever.” Chrissy nodded her head in compliance “I understand Gardener”. She hated having to “pick this flower” to replace her in the Garden, but she knew that she couldn’t worry about that right now. Besides, the Gardener was letting her keep her journal, and he didn’t find the clues that she hid in it. She put enough information in there to lead her back to the Garden. This was the only way any of the girls would have a chance at escape. She knew that he wouldn’t betray her because he gave the serum to her predecessor and she never came back and no one ever saw her again. She was a smart girl and even if her memory was wiped clean the clues would still work enough to get her to take her journal to a professional who might be able to unscramble them. The Gardener, then unlocked the handcuffs and Chrissy stepped out of the van and went to the back to grab her cart. It had beautiful floral arrangements on top and a whole array of housekeeping supplies in the hollow underneath. She was wearing a hotel housekeeping jumper, under her “Heaven Scent Floral Boutique” uniform. She went into the banquet room where tomorrow’s wedding will be held. She wondered, as she was placing the arrangements on the table, if she would ever indulge in the womanly fantasy of marriage. She looked around and saw Hector give her the sign, she wheeled the cart into a storage closet, pulled off her “Heaven Scent” uniform and pulled the cleaning supplies from the bottom part of her cart. She left the storage closet looking completely different from when she entered it. She followed Hector to the bathroom. He knew what the little flower bud looked like. He said, “When she comes in, I will place the maintenance sign on the door and lock it. When you hear the lock “click” you will know that you’re on. Get it done quickly! We want to be out of here before anyone notices she’s missing!” As she turned away he grabbed her by the back of her shirt and swung her back around to face him. “If you fail, the boys and I get free rein with you. You know how bad we’ve been wanting that, no rules” The smile on his face made her want to throw up. He has always been vile, but he has never been so straight forward before. “I hope I can save this girl before Hector gets to her.” She thought “if you don’t let go of me I cant really do the job can I? I don’t think the Gardener will be very pleased if I fail because of you” He released her and she tried not to let him hear the breath of relief that escaped her lungs. Before he could say anything, she vanished into the bathroom. It wasn’t five minutes before a young girl, barely fourteen years old, appeared and she heard the click of Hector locking the door. She let the girl go to the bathroom, and then as the young girl was washing her hands, she asked her “Your arms look like they might fit, could you help me get something out of the Nursery. It fell behind something that is too heavy for me to move, but there is a little gap. It will only take a second or two, please, it would mean a lot to me.” The girl smiled and said “Sure, I’d love to help.” Chrissy felt such a terrible pang of guilt, but led the girl into the Nursery. As soon as the door closed, Chrissy placed the chloroform soaked rag over the girls’ mouth. The last words the girl heard were “I am so sorry, but I promise, you will be home soon.” The young girl went limp in her arms; she gently placed her in the hollow cart. She was about to cry but managed to choke back the tears and hold true to the knowledge that she would save this poor innocent child from the fate that she endured. She gathered her composure and left the Nursery. She lightly tapped on the bathroom door and Hector unlocked it. He smiled widely at the look of guilt that was so blatant on her face. “You better take care of that bleeding heart of yours or someone will know you’re guilty just by looking at you”. She ignored him and wheeled the cart toward the shipping doors. Hector retrieved the sign form the door and followed her, eager to see the new flower so close. Hector and the others helpers wheeled their carts into the van. The Gardener took Chrissy and put her back in the passenger seat and put the handcuffs back on her wrists. They had just made it out of town and Chrissy was beginning to relax and enjoy the scenery when she got a rag over her mouth and everything went black. When she came too, she was strapped to a table back at the Mansion where the Garden was located. She was so close to being free, he would not do this to her. Over the next minute her faith dwindled away and was replaced by fear. “Gardener! What did I do wrong?” Hector came over with the needle, his smile was menacing and sent shivers down her spine. “Oh, my dear, did you really think I was stupid enough not to catch your little clues. It makes me angry that you think I’m that stupid. I was planning on letting Hector have you, but I was too vexed.” Hector swabbed her arm and stuck her with the needle. The Gardener came over one last time “You are probably feeling pretty weird right now, but I want to see your face when you finally process this. There was no serum, I used you. I can’t set you physically free; you might try to take my garden away from me” Chrissy finally understood what was going on, but it was too late. Everything was going black and she could hear screaming in the background, no, those were her screams. The last thing she heard before the darkness engulfed her was “Once she is gone, mulch her…”
Chapter One July 5.2004
“What am I doing here? Let me out! Let me out!”. She had been pounding on the walls for hours. Her small delicate hands were swollen and bleeding from the hard stone. Her voice now barely a whisper from the previous hours she spent screaming for help. “You have to let me go, this isn’t right”. “Shut up!” the voice was harsh. The man was standing just outside the door. “You’re not going anywhere. You belong to me now!” Her heart sank at his “matter of fact” tone. She heard the sound of light footsteps, unlike the ones she had been hearing all day. They seemed to be getting closer. She was devoured by darkness as the miniscule light she had been granted disappeared behind a shadow of a man. The latch on the door she had been pounding on clicked. This is what she had been waiting for. But before, there was only one person to deal with. Now she was going to have to fight two. The room was engulfed in light, so bright it hurt her eyes. Only one thing remained in darkness. The man standing in front of her. He could at least stand in front of the light that was shining in her eyes. From what she could see, he looked like a monster, and the light reflecting off of him was ghastly and terrifying. She wanted to run, maybe if she was careful enough she could get past him. Of course then she had to worry about the man outside the doorway. Fine, she would fight them. She has had experience defending herself against assholes. After her moms “clients” would finish with her mom they often wanted to try something a little younger, fresh. She made her mom take her to Jujitsu classes and she excelled in them, her teacher thinks she is very formidable . She wasn’t a little helpless child; she could take care of herself. Her mom always told her to put up a fight. “If they want to hurt you, hurt them back” she always used to say that. Even if she lost, she would make sure to leave them in pretty bad shape, at least a few scars in noticeable places. She used to watch CSI all the time and the bad guy was always caught because the victim fought. So yes, she would fight. The man opened his mouth to speak, but she didn’t give him a chance. She jumped at him so unexpectedly that she almost nailed him right in the crotch. His only option was to jump out of the way. Hopefully the guard outside the door would be better prepared. It didn’t sound like he was, after he heard a yell and a thud. “She was free, she did it!” She was just about to smile when she felt a hand tug at her hair. She tried to kick at her attacker but he dodged her attack with ease. Before she knew it, she was plummeting to the ground and all her hopes of escape were being crushed. She looked up to see who had grabbed her, but all she saw was a fist coming down on her. Her instinct caused her to flinch and the fist stopped. She took this moment of hesitation to attempt a guard escape on the man. He was taken by surprise but quickly recovered and wrapped his arm around her neck to hold her still. He stood up and jerked her back to her feet mercilessly throwing her against the wall. She went black again. “Well, aren’t you feisty? I must admit, as entertaining as you are Hector will want you punished for making him look like a fool in front of everyone. Tell me, where did you learn to Jujitsu?” He sat silently waiting for a reply, but he did not receive one “little girl, it is rude not to reply when spoken to. I might have to punish you if this rebellion continues” She turned to look at him for the first time, really understanding his words. “We’re not in the same place I was earlier” “Ah good, you’ve decided to be civil after all. Do you remember me?” “No” “That’s irritating; you should always remember the face of the person you try to fight” “You were the guy in the other room, the one I charged at?” “Very good, yes, I am also the one who caught you and mercifully didn’t beat you to a pulp” “How did you catch me? I left you lying in the dirt with your butt in the air” “Yes you did, but compared to me your awfully slow, not to mention I know my way around this place better than you do” “Why am I here?” “Because we chose you to be” “Where am I?” “I’m afraid that little piece of information is forbidden.” “Who are you, and where is the lady that tricked me in the Nursery?” “Oh, Mum is dead.” He laughed at the look of horror on her face. He could tell that she was finally processing the depth of the situation she was in. She continued to stare, how could someone be so at ease and talk about someone who is dead? This man was a monster, just like all the men who tried to hurt her mom and her “Aren’t you glad that she’s dead?” he continued “She sold you out. She sacrificed your freedom and well being for her own. I couldn’t let her get away with something like that. Oh, but your just a child, you probably don’t even understand what I’m saying.” He was wrong about that, she knew exactly what he was saying, or at least part of what he was saying. She knew that he intended to hurt her, and she vowed not to let him. She refused to be like her mother and bow to the wishes of this man. She would take a beating before she would let this man damage her in the ways that those other men damaged her mother. “I won’t do it” she said indignantly “Yes, you will.” His smile faded on the last word. “You don’t have to worry though, no one expects you to do it right now, and you are not ready. You wont be able to hide behind you innocence for long though, soon you will have to become like the other girls that take residence here.” “My mom will look for me, she needs me” “Your mom doesn’t care, that’s one of the reasons we chose you, and the other is because of your spirit. Many people find it a treasure to break another persons spirit. Even a child’s spirit is fun to toy with on occasion. “ “You men are sick” “ What do you mean, you men? Women enjoy it just as much, sometimes even more. And when have you had any experience with men?” “My moms customer used to try stuff with me, that’s why I know how to defend myself.” “Are you still as innocent as I think you are?” “If you think that I would let one of those men hurt me, you must be dumber than you look.” “Well my darling, thank you for assuaging my fears. Unfortunately, now that I know you are still a virgin I know that we have chosen our newest flower correctly.” He laughed at the look of pure terror that was on her face. “I believe we will start with a tour of the mansion. You better get to know this place real well; you will be spending the next ten years here.” She didn’t move. He moved toward her. “Get up! If you do not do as I say I will have to hurt you and I believe such things should be a last resort, for now.” She remained seated; he took another step toward her and was practically standing on top of her. He lifted his hand and she flinched. He brought his hand down toward her as though to hit her and grabbed her arm forcefully, dragging her to her feet. She looked at him defiantly, then, realizing that anything she does now is dangerous to her health, lowered her eyes to the floor. “Good, now, please look out the window” This time she did as directed. She looked out the window and saw a beautiful green lawn covered in gorgeous flowers and in the middle, a large fountain with marble frogs spitting water into the sky at invisible enemies. It was truly a beautiful sight, but that wasn’t what the man was looking at. “I don’t see anything” she said. “Exactly, you are hundreds of miles away from any civilization of any sort. You may find a way to get outside alone, but as you can see, there is nowhere for you to go” She looked back out at the grass and stood there transfixed. “Aren’t you going to cry now that you realize how helpless you are? “No, I refuse to cry for you, and I am never helpless” She said that last part with such confidence that it made him a little uneasy. “Your not alone you know. There are others, but you can’t see them right now. Right now, I am your only friend, I am your father, brother, uncle, any male figure you ever had in your life. That includes the ones that are dangerous. But I am much worse then them. “Well, I handled myself with them. I might be able to handle myself with you. If I’m going to be in this hell forever, would mind telling me your name, I mean aside from Satan.” She said. He was taken aback by her bluntness and her ability to cope with her current situation. He found himself admiring this brave little girl, and also wondering what interesting times were ahead. With a smile he said, “You can call me The Gardener”
